In the 1970s and 80s, Locs sunglasses were very popular among young people and defined the LA look. Gang members referred to some of their more wild and active or indeed mentally disturbed members as "loco". It was so common in Crip parlance that it was shortened to Loc and used as a suffix in some gang members' names.
